Damping medium

Hydraulic oil / COMPENSOL®

LEBEN offers a suitable damping medium for industrial shock absorbers, appropriate for every temperature range – also leakage-free and fire-resistant, depending on requirements.

Hydraulic oil industrial shock absorber

The damping medium used by LEBEN-Dämpfungstechnik GmbH is employed with various consistencies, depending on the specific need, under the designation COMPENSOL® . For use in temperature-controlled indoor environments as well as extreme high or low temperatures, we provide the ideal hydraulic oil (so-called medium).

Typical applications include:

  • industrial shock absorbers and heavy-duty buffers with special temperature requirements
  • end stops and emergency end positions in machines, systems, and conveying technology
  • shock absorbers for steel mills, foundries, test benches, and high-temperature areas
  • applications with increased fire protection requirements or flame-retardant media
  • special shock absorbers where leakage safety and long-term stability are particularly important
  • low-temperature applications, outdoor areas, and systems with changing environmental conditions

By selecting the appropriate damping medium, the industrial shock absorber can be tailored to temperature range, damping behavior, viscosity, leakage safety, and fire protection requirements.

Special damping medium:

For special applications, e.g., at temperatures above +80°C or below -40°C, we use a paste-like dispersion as the damping medium. This medium solidifies into a seemingly solid mass at rest and only becomes fluid under the influence of force. When the load ends, it returns to its seemingly solid original state.

This dispersion has the following properties:
chemical:
a colloidal solid dispersion
physical:
a non-Newtonian shear-thinning Bingham fluid with viscoplastic properties

It is a paste, or rather a coagulation structure, and deforms plastically under mechanical stress. The structure returns to its original state after the load ends (thixotropy). Due to interparticle interactions, viscosity is not constant but a function of shear stress. At low shear stresses, no flow occurs, and the viscosity is infinitely high. Above a certain shear stress, the flow process begins (Bingham yield stress). Depending on the formulation, shear-thinning behavior (plastic behavior) can occur immediately above the yield stress, or Newtonian behavior may precede the shear-thinning behavior.

Applications for damping medium:

  • High-temperature applications in steel mills, foundries, furnace environments, test benches, and thermally stressed machine areas
  • Low-temperature applications outdoors, in refrigeration systems, with changing ambient temperatures, or low operating temperatures
  • Fire protection areas with increased requirements for flame-retardant or fire-inhibiting damping media Leakage-critical
  • applications where oil leakage is to be avoided or the leakage risk is to be significantly reduced
  • Risk environments with increased requirements for operational safety, cleanliness, media resistance, or personal protection
  • Environmentally sensitive areas, for example, systems in water protection zones, outdoor installations, or applications with increased environmental compatibility requirements
  • Bio-degradable damping media for applications where mineral oil-based media are undesirable or only partially permissible
  • Special shock absorbers and special buffers where standard hydraulic oils are insufficient in terms of viscosity, temperature range, or safety requirements
